.eu Domain Registration — What You Get
.eu is the country-code top-level domain for the European Union, operated by EURid vzw, a non-profit based in Belgium. IANA delegated it on 5 August 2005, it opened to trademark holders in December 2005, and general registration began on 7 April 2006. It now covers roughly 3.7 million names and includes the alphabets of all EU official languages through IDN support.
Terms run 1 to 10 years, and under EURid's rules a registration is silently renewed in one-year increments unless it is cancelled. DNSSEC is supported. Since the GDPR changes, EURid publishes no registrant data through the classic port-43 WHOIS: web WHOIS shows an obfuscated email for natural persons and the name for legal persons, and privacy or proxy services are not accepted — the real registrant must always be recorded.
- Registry: EURid vzw, Belgium; delegated 5 August 2005, public since 7 April 2006.
- Terms: 1 to 10 years, silently renewed in one-year steps under EURid rules.
- Names: 2 to 63 characters; letters, digits and hyphens; IDN supported in EU language scripts.
- DNSSEC: supported.
- WHOIS: no port-43 registrant data; natural persons protected, legal persons named; proxy registrations not allowed.
Who Can Register a .eu Domain Name
.eu is restricted to Europe. Under the rules in force since 2 August 2021, a .eu name can be registered by a citizen of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway regardless of where they live; by a resident of one of those countries; or by an undertaking or organisation established there.
In plain terms: an Indian individual or an India-based company with no EU or EEA citizen, resident or established entity behind the registration cannot hold a .eu domain. The rules are enforced — after Brexit, UK-based holders who no longer qualified saw their domains suspended from January 2021. The workable route for an Indian group is an EU-established subsidiary: the subsidiary registers and holds the name as the real registrant.
If you only sell into Europe without an EU entity, .com (₹1,380 a year at WebJi) does the job with no eligibility test.
- Eligible: EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway citizens, wherever they reside.
- Eligible: residents of those countries.
- Eligible: undertakings and organisations established in those countries.
- Not eligible: an Indian individual or company with no EU/EEA citizen, resident or established entity in the registration.
- Enforcement is real: post-Brexit, ineligible UK holders were suspended from 1 January 2021.
What a .eu Domain Is Used For
.eu is the address of the EU institutions themselves — europa.eu is the official portal — and of pan-European programmes and campaigns. European companies use it for union-wide storefronts, and EURid jointly publishes World Reports on internationalised domain names with UNESCO, underlining the multilingual positioning.
For an Indian business, .eu signals a European identity, which suits groups with an EU subsidiary or an EU-resident founder. Exporters without a European entity usually stay on .com, which European buyers accept without question.
- EU institutions and pan-European programmes (europa.eu).
- Union-wide brand storefronts of European companies.
- A European identity marker for EU/EEA-established entities.
- For Indian groups: registered through the EU-established arm, not the Indian parent.
.eu Domain Registration Plans & Pricing (INR)
WebJi lists .eu at ₹729 a year for registration and ₹905 for renewal, read on 4 November 2026, before 18% GST. Transfers are billed at ₹729. Premium names cost more and are quoted before payment, and the registrant must satisfy the EU/EEA eligibility rule.
| TLD | Registration (₹/yr) | Renewal (₹/yr) | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| .eu | ₹729 | ₹905 | European identity, EU/EEA-linked holders | Register |
| .com | ₹1,380 | ₹1,480 | Global default, brand names | Register |
| .in | ₹1,000 | ₹1,000 | Indian identity | Register |
| .co.in | ₹809 | ₹877 | Indian corporate second level | Register |
WebJi billing prices, read on 4 November 2026 — the renewal column is what the second and later years cost, before 18% GST.
.eu Renewal, Transfer and Expiry Rules
A .eu term runs 1 to 10 years, and EURid renews registrations silently in one-year increments unless you cancel. The renewal rate at WebJi is ₹905 against a ₹729 first year, both before 18% GST, and notices go to the registrant email — keep it reachable and use auto-renew.
Expiry works through quarantine rather than the gTLD grace-and-redemption cycle: when a .eu name expires or is deleted, EURid puts it in quarantine for 40 days. The site and email stop resolving, nobody else can register it, and only the current holder can restore it through the registrar, usually for an additional fee. After 40 days the name is fully deleted and released on a first-come, first-served basis.
Transfers use an authorisation code between registrars, and WebJi bills a .eu transfer at ₹729. Note that eligibility carries over with the name — a transfer does not fix a broken EU/EEA link, and an ineligible holder risks the same suspension the UK holders saw.
.eu vs .com and .in for an Indian Business
The extension is not a ranking factor; content and links decide placement. The practical comparison for an Indian business is .com at ₹1,380 a year and .in at ₹1,000 a year at WebJi, both open to anyone — .eu at ₹729 is the cheapest of the three but carries an EU/EEA eligibility test.
Choose .eu only when an EU-established entity or an EU/EEA citizen or resident is the real registrant and a European identity matters commercially. Otherwise .com covers European buyers with no restrictions, and .in signals the home market.
- .com — global default, ₹1,380/year, renewal ₹1,480, open to anyone.
- .in — NIXI's country domain, ₹1,000/year, reads as Indian.
- .eu — ₹729/year, renewal ₹905, EU/EEA citizen, resident or establishment required.
- A cheap extension is not a bargain if eligibility later fails: suspended names lose the year paid for.
How to Register a .eu Domain with WebJi
Registration is one order with an eligibility reality check: the registrant you enter must be an EU/EEA citizen, resident or established organisation. Check the name, enter the qualifying registrant, pay in INR, and the entry is created with the contacts you supply.
- Search the name with the domain search box on this page; a .eu result shows free, taken or premium.
- Enter the registrant that meets the rule — for an Indian group, that means the EU-established entity, not the Indian parent.
- Choose a term from 1 to 10 years and pay in INR. The GST invoice is issued at once.
- Point the nameservers at your host, then allow for DNS propagation, usually a few hours.
- Turn on auto-renew: .eu renews silently year by year, and after expiry the 40-day quarantine clock starts immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a .eu domain cost in India?
WebJi lists .eu at ₹729 a year for registration and ₹905 for renewal, read on 4 November 2026 and before 18% GST. Premium names cost more and are quoted before payment.
Can I register a .eu domain from India?
Only if the registrant qualifies: an EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway citizen (wherever they live), a resident of those countries, or an organisation established there. An Indian individual or India-based company with no such link cannot register or keep a .eu name.
What happens when a .eu domain expires?
It goes into EURid quarantine for 40 days: the site and email stop resolving, nobody else can take the name, and only the holder can restore it through the registrar, usually for an extra fee. After 40 days it is deleted and released first-come, first-served.
Why does a .eu renewal cost more than the first year?
The first year is discounted while the renewal is charged at the normal rate. On this page that is ₹729 registration against ₹905 renewal, both before 18% GST.
How do I transfer a .eu domain to WebJi®?
Take the authorisation code from your current registrar and start the transfer with us; it is billed at ₹729 before 18% GST. Eligibility travels with the name, so the holder must still meet the EU/EEA rule after the move.
Can an Indian company with a European office register .eu?
Yes — through the EU-established entity. The subsidiary, not the Indian parent, becomes the registrant of record, because EURid requires the holder itself to be an EU/EEA citizen, resident or established organisation.
Is .eu better than .com for reaching European customers?
The extension is not a ranking factor, so .eu does not rank you higher in Europe. A .com works everywhere without an eligibility test; .eu signals a European identity, which only matters when you genuinely have an EU/EEA-linked holder.
