The four layers explained

• L — Linux: the server operating system (AlmaLinux, Ubuntu, CloudLinux on shared hosting). Everything runs on top of it.

• A — Apache: the web server. It listens on ports 80/443, accepts each request and returns responses.

• M — MySQL (or MariaDB): the database that stores posts, users, products and settings, answering queries in milliseconds.

• P — PHP: the language WordPress, Magento and Laravel are written in; Apache executes PHP to build dynamic pages.

How a request travels through LAMP

1. DNS, TCP and TLS bring your connection to the server on port 443.
2. Apache receives the request for /blog/post-1 and matches it to the right virtual host.
3. Seeing a dynamic route, Apache invokes PHP, which loads WordPress.
4. WordPress connects to MySQL/MariaDB, queries wp_posts for the slug, wp_options for settings and wp_postmeta for custom fields, then assembles HTML through the theme.
5. Apache returns the finished page; CSS, JS and images are served directly as static files, no PHP needed.

Total: milliseconds on a healthy stack. This division — dynamic pages through PHP, static files direct — is also the mental model for caching: full-page caches store the finished HTML so the PHP and MySQL work happens once instead of per visitor.

LEMP — E for Engine-x — replaces Apache with nginx, which uses an event loop that handles tens of thousands of connections cheaply and typically proxies PHP to a separate PHP-FPM pool. nginx serves static content and high concurrency more efficiently.
