What is cloud computing?
Cloud computing means using a provider's servers, storage or applications over the network and paying for that access, instead of owning every machine. The provider runs the hardware. You open the result from an office or a phone. The gains and the limits of that model are on benefits of cloud computing.
What is the difference between public, private and hybrid cloud?
A public cloud is a provider's pool, shared by many customers, with each customer's data separated by software. A private cloud is a pool reserved for one organisation. Hybrid cloud joins both, so some systems stay private and some run in public. The limits of that join are on hybrid cloud hosting.
| Model | Who the pool is for |
|---|---|
| Public | Many customers on a provider's cloud, separated by software. |
| Private | One organisation's pool. |
| Hybrid | Some systems stay private and some run on the public side. |
What do IaaS, PaaS and SaaS mean?
IaaS rents virtual servers, and you install the system and the applications. PaaS rents a runtime, and you bring the application. SaaS rents finished software that you only log in to use. Who manages each layer is compared on SaaS versus PaaS versus IaaS, and that comparison stays on its own page.
- IaaS: you rent virtual servers and install the system and the applications.
- PaaS: you rent a runtime and bring the application.
- SaaS: you rent finished software and log in to use it.
Each line above is only the meaning of the name. The chart of who patches the server, the runtime and the application is the comparison just linked.
How does virtualization make the cloud work?
Virtualization lets one physical server act as several separate computers. A hypervisor divides CPU, memory and disk into virtual machines, and each machine runs its own operating system. Cloud providers use that split so customers share hardware without sharing files. The mechanism is what virtualization is.
- One physical server runs a hypervisor.
- The hypervisor assigns CPU, memory and disk to virtual machines.
- Each virtual machine runs an operating system of its own.
- Customers share the hardware and do not share each other's files.
What are cloud computing examples in India?
In India the common examples are ordinary tools, not a new kind of internet. Staff open business mail and shared files in a browser. A shop uses billing software it does not install on every PC. A firm rents a virtual server for its site instead of a machine in a cupboard. Those are SaaS and IaaS.
- Business mail and shared files opened in a browser (SaaS).
- Billing or accounting software the shop does not install on every PC (SaaS).
- A virtual server rented for a website, instead of a machine in a cupboard (IaaS).
- A bank or hospital keeping sensitive systems on a private pool and the public site on a shared cloud (hybrid).
How does cloud hosting differ from traditional hosting?
Traditional shared hosting places many sites on one server under a fixed plan, and it does not include root access. Cloud hosting is a server sold as a stated amount of CPU, memory and disk. WebJi® sells that model as cloud hosting in India. A fixed virtual machine is a different choice from this one.
| Traditional shared hosting | Cloud hosting | |
|---|---|---|
| Machine | Many sites on one server | A server at a stated CPU, memory and disk |
| Root access | Not included | You administer the server |
| How it is sold | A shared plan | A named server size |
If the choice is a published cloud tier against one fixed virtual machine, read cloud hosting versus VPS. This section only separates a cloud server from traditional shared hosting. The price of a WebJi® cloud server stays on the cloud hosting page.
