What WebP Is and Why Google Recommends It
WebP is Google's image format — roughly 25-35 percent smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality — and converting a WordPress library is a plugin job for most sites.
Method 1 — plugin conversion, step by step:
- Install ShortPixel or Imagify from the plugin directory.
- Choose the compression level (lossy is fine for photos) and the WebP delivery option.
- Run the bulk optimizer over the Media Library; new uploads convert automatically.
- Let the plugin serve WebP via rewrite rules or the <picture> fallback it injects.
- Verify in PageSpeed Insights — the 'serve images in modern formats' audit should clear.
Large libraries can convert server-side instead (cPanel + cwebp in a loop) — same result, no API credits. Measure LCP before and after; images are usually the largest page weight, which is why site slowness fixes start here. Test on WordPress hosting staging if your plan includes it.

Method 2: Bulk Convert via cPanel and Command Line
On Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), the honest summary is that defaults matter more than brand names — a well-set budget plan outranks a mis-tuned premium one. WebJi® documents its defaults openly and adjusts them per ticket when workloads need it.
